On Fridays, Lisa-Jo provides the prompt, and we dive in headfirst with hearts and words. It’s a little game called Five Minute Friday. Won’t you join us?
Today’s prompt is STORY.
Ready?

God is writing the story of my life, of all our lives. He is the Master Author, the One who knows each twist and turn of the story, who knows each character intimately and has planned ahead for every plot twist. So why do I fight Him for authorship? Why do I struggle with the role I’ve been cast and want to suggest alternative endings?
In my rebellion and stubbornness, I want to be the author. I want to direct the plot, determine the outcome, play favorites with certain characters and reward the heroine in the way I see fit.
There can be only one author to this story of my life, and I’ve missed the point entirely when I fight Him to write what I do not know. “Can the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’ Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’?” (Isaiah 45:9)
I can wrestle for control of my story and order things in a way that seems sensible to me, yet I am penning the downfall of my character. Is it not infinitely better to live as a minor character in the Story of His triumph than to be the principal actor in a selfish tragedy?
When God writes the story of my life differently than I had imagined, I can balk and fight Him for my own desire, question Him endlessly and beg for a more exciting chapter, or I can assume my role with grace and thankfulness and bring honor to the Great Author of my story.
His role for me has not looked the way I’d imagined, but it is a beautiful story unfolding one page at a time. Lord, help me choose to read along with you and savor each page. Forgive me when I bring out the editing pen and attempt to refine your Master Work. Help me to be obedient to your authority and sovereignty, for your glory and my growth. Thank you for choosing to include me in your Story, for giving me a part to play and allowing me a front-row seat as the truth of Your Holy Mystery slowly penetrates my selfish heart.
“But now, O LORD, You are our Father, we are the clay, and You our potter; and all of us are the work of Your hand.” (Isaiah 65:8)
“Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also vessels of wood and of earthenware, and some to honor and some to dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.” (2 Timothy 2:20-21)
{Confession: I got lost in this and forgot to watch the clock, so I went over five minutes. Oops.}

Well Jana I’m glad you confessed because I was a little jealous over how fast you could type! That being said, I loved your post and am so thankful that He is in control of my story. Also thankful that He glues the previous pages down so we don’t go back and revisit! Now … just where is that Butler who surely “did it?”
Blessings,
Felecia
LOL! I was thinking the very same thing Felecia on how long it was!
Long or no it’s still a beautiful post!
Heh heh. Thanks, Mindy – have a great weekend!
Thanks, Felecia. Confession is good for the soul… and for not making others think too highly of my typing skills.
I love that you said He glues your previous pages together – amen!
Beautiful post, love the pictures too.
You may have gone over the time a tad, but I’m blown away with your skill and focus. I tend to ramble and it takes me five or ten minutes to get to the point of my story. These Fridays are helping, bloggers like you help, I see how well you stay on track and I’m encouraged. Thanks for the encouragement and the story.
Thanks for your sweet words, Nita. God has been hammering away at me about this for a while, so I guess it wasn’t too difficult to find my focus today! God bless you, sister!
So moved by your 5+ minute write today, Jana. Thank you for sharing from your heart. What a story He is writing in you!
“savor each page…..” striving with you.
All for Him with hugs to you,
Nikki
He still has a lot of work to do, but thank goodness I’m not who I was! Big ((hugs)) right back atcha, friend!
I especially love this: Is it not infinitely better to live as a minor character in the Story of His triumph than to be the principal actor in a selfish tragedy?
Thanks for a great thought to chew on today!
It’s a lesson I have to re-learn almost daily! So grateful for grace. Can’t wait for our lunch, sweet friend!
Thank you for blessing my heart this afternoon Jana! May the Lord continue to bless you as you do this.
Ah, Grace, I miss your smiling face! Thank you for your sweet words. I pray all is well for you! ((hugs))
What amazing questions you’ve provided: “So why do I fight Him for authorship? Why do I struggle with the role I’ve been cast and want to suggest alternative endings?…Is it not infinitely better to live as a minor character in the Story of His triumph than to be the principal actor in a selfish tragedy?”
Awesome post, Jana.
Thanks, Caroline. I’m so grateful for a BIG God who can handle my questions and “suggestions”.
Hope you had a great weekend!
